Ordered the camera on 7/4 and it was supposed to arrive by 7/17. It didn’t arrive and the tracking info provided indicated that it had not been picked up from shipper (amazon.com). I sent an email to find out where my order was and the response said to wait until 7/28. I waited and the camera never arrived. I sent another email and was told that the camera was now temporarily out of stock. I cancelled the order, got a refund, and ordered from another dealer through amazon.com. The camera arrived in less than a week.

Camera seems nice but cannot be used without Fuji’s software which is mainly designed to get you to order prints from Fuji. The Fuji software is only compatible with Windows and Mac OS – it is not Linux compatible. You cannot access the camera from Linux. The camera does not present itself as a directory structure USB device. You can only access it with the Fuji crapware. If you are a Linux user, do not buy this camera. Fuji’s main aim is to get you to buy prints so, even if you are a Windows or Mac user, consider if adware is really how you want to access your purchase.

I know very little about cameras, so I readily concede that all of my complaints may be due to my own ignorance.

I wanted this camera for a very specific purpose. I have a lot of microfilm and microfiche, which I am hoping to be able to selectively digitize (without paying for an expensive microfilm-to-digital machine). I had read on the web that cameras with Super Macro Mode could be used for this purpose. I have an old Olympus camera from 5 years ago which has Super Macro Mode, but it does not get closer than 3.5 inches. This is satisfactory for some microfilm images (such as front pages of magazines) but the magnification is not strong enough to read text in newspaper microfilm, or microfiche. The Fujifilm FinePix S1500 specs stated that its Super Macro Mode can be as close as .8in (that’s over four times closer than my old camera, plus it has over twice the resolution). So I hoped that the Fujifilm camera would greatly enable my ability to digitize my microfilm, perhaps by a factor of 9. But unfortunately, those hopes have been dashed.

To my major disappointment, images from this Fujifilm camera at the closest distance of .8in are not as close-up as my old camera at 3.5in. (Obviously the Fujifilm camera uses a much wider angle.) To make matters worse, the Fujifilm camera at closest Super Macro Mode has bad bulging away from the image’s center, causing distortion in any photographic images from the microfilm I am trying to digitize. I have uploaded a photo graph showing the extent of that bulging, which was totally absent in my old camera’s Super Macro Mode. The images taken with the Fujifilm camera do have sharper resolution, so by zooming into the saved image I can read microfilmed text a little clearer. But it’s not that much clearer, and nowhere nearly enough for my needs. Small print on microfilm is still unreadable.

So I’m rating the camera a 3, because I was so disappointed with it. I assume it is still a good, solid general use camera, and if you don’t want it for the special purpose of digitizing microfilm, you might be very satisfied with Fujifilm FinePix S1500.

My husband purchased this camera for me as a birthday gift. When I got the camera I inserted the batteries and memory card and turned it on. When the settings came up it was a little blurry but I thought it was just because of the light I was under; WRONG. When I got to a picture mode the whole screen had a horrible purplish color to everything. the image was so out of focus I couldn’t tell if I was looking at my husband or my cat. I tried to look through the EVF to see if it made a difference and it was the same story. After several shots were taken, which all came up purple with huge black lines through it, I tried different settings. I tried everything, even took it outside to see a different lighting. Nothing changed. I called Fujifilm and the tech support told me it was a bad sensor and to send it back.

I tried to be hopeful that the good reviews would outweigh the bad reviews and the problems other people found were just one in a million. I was wrong. Camera is on it’s way back to amazon.

  5. I purchased the Fuji S1500 digital from Amazon and received it on 7/14/09. The following statement is not my opinion but what I experienced with the Fuji digital camera S1500.

The photographs have an over exposed washed out appearance. I read the manual and could not resolve the washed out exposure of the photos from this camera.

When I make movies with this camera the audio sound is horrible. It appears this camera has the volume level to record sound too high. The people speaking at a normal level the sound recored from this camera has lots of over volume static, like the recording level is set at 10 causing lots of distorsion, when it should be set at level 1.

Fuji in the past has been a company that offered what was promised with their product. Today the Fuji advertisements promise a great product, until you purchase the product to find it is TRASH.
